So what are Intel’s product plans for 22nm? It may be another milestone in Intel’s ability to get more transistors that are faster and yet, stingier with the power they use. But what do they do with this breakthrough? Is the product side of the organization on board with it? Are they excited or is it just ho-hum. What does it mean for Intel’s efforts in mobile? To find out, I interviewed Steve Smith, corporate Vice President and Director of Netbook & Tablet Development and Enabling. Steve describes how Ivy Bridge (22nm) fits into their Tick-Tock roadmap and where they expect to go with it.
Ivy Bridge is a Tick, which is a shrink in process technology. Tocks bring new architectures. So we delve into how well the Tick-Tock product introduction is working for Intel and Ivy Bridge’s importance in terms of how it will affect the thermal and power envelope of the new processors slated to come later this year. We also examine what’s going on with Atom’s accelerated shrink and the information consumption versus creativity debate that is so critical to how the market distribution shifts between notebooks, netbooks, and tablets.

Steve’s organization develops the system hardware and software reference designs to enable Atom processors in netbook and tablet systems. The team also provides technical support for Intel’s OEM customers as they develop netbook and tablet products.
Steve has held many positions in microprocessor development at Intel, including: design manager for i386™ SX and i386 SL processors, engineering manager and general manager of the Pentium Processor Division, and general manager of the Itanium Processor Division. Across the last 20 years.
